BOISE, Idaho—An Idaho lawmaker is so enraged by Idaho’s growing population of 850 wolves she wants to send President Barack Obama a clear message from the Legislature: Lift federal protections so the state can manage the predators itself.
Rep. Lenore Barrett told the House Resources Committee that Idaho had fulfilled commitments to restore wolves after they were reintroduced here more than a decade ago.
Obama is now reviewing an order to delist the gray wolf put into place by the Bush Administration.
Barrett conceded Wednesday her resolution is symbolic, but says it’s all Idaho can do short of throwing a shoe.
The colorful Challis Republican told the panel, “I hope you can print this. Then we can duke it out.”
One Democrat, Rep. Phylis King of Boise, suggested giving Obama a break, since he’s been president only three weeks, but the committee agreed to introduce the resolution.
