Vandals trespassed onto Thomas Jefferson High School property overnight and defaced an American flag with racial slurs and hate symbols and hung it on the flagpole, authorities say.

Agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Denver police are investigating the incident, which happened between 10 p.m. Thursday and 7 a.m. today, said Sonny Jackson, Denver police spokesman.

The act violates two laws: defacing property and mutilation of the flag, Jackson said.

In a statement released this afternoon, Denver Public Schools Superintendent Tom Boasberg said DPS is “shocked and deeply concerned about this incident.”

“We will work with law enforcement and do everything in our power to hold responsible the individuals involved,” the statement said.

Anyone who saw the incident is asked to call Denver police at 720-913-STOP or 720-913-6050.
