Winds that gusted up to 60 mph along the Front Range Tuesday are expected to calm today but cooler temperatures in the afternoon could usher in snow flurries in the evening, the National Weather Service in Boulder warned.

After a high of 53 on Tuesday, the temperature is expected to top out at 46 today, with a 10 percent chance of snow after 11 a.m., according to forecasters.

Thursday is expected to be mostly sunny in the metro region, with a high near 50, followed by a high of 51 on Friday, 57 on Saturday and 62 on Sunday, according to the forecast.

Snow continued to pile up in the High Country. A winter storm warning is in effect for northwest Colorado, which could see up to 10 inches of snow by tonight.

Driving conditions could be hazardous, and emergency officials urge drivers to check local conditions before heading out and make sure their vehicles have snow tires, chains or four-wheel drive, as well as emegency supplies.

Intermittent snow is expected to continue in the mountains until Friday, with sunny skies and temperatures around freezing each day.

Avalanche potential is “considerable” in many locations, according to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center in Boulder.

Caution is urged in the back country near Aspen, Crested Butte, Eldora, Empire, Estes Park, Glenwood Springs, Salida, Steamboat Springs and Telluride.

Snowpack in the mountains ranges from 111 percent to 121 percent of the 30-year average. Statewide, snow pack is at 112 percent of average, according to the Natural Resources Conservation Service office in Lakewood.
