VAIL, Colo.—Vail’s three highest-paid town officials have all received raises even though the town council is cutting $1 million from the budget, laying off two people and eliminating several vacant positions.

Town Manager Stan Zemler, Town Attorney Matt Mire and Municipal Court Judge Buck Allen were awarded merit raises this week after performance reviews by the council.

Mayor Dick Cleveland declined to say how big the raises were, telling the Vail Daily it’s a “personnel matter.” Cleveland says it’s important to keep salaries competitive during tough economic times.

Before to the raises, Zemler earned $160,325 per year, Mire $132,000 per year and Allen $49.61 per hour.

Vail Human Resources Director John Power says Allen typically works about 17 hours a week.
