Colorado defensive backfield coach Greg Brown no longer is a candidate for the defensive coordinator position at the University of South Florida and will remain on the CU staff, sources familiar with the situation in Florida and Colorado confirmed today.
According to the Tampa Tribune, Brown interviewed with USF coach Jim Leavitt last week in the Tampa Bay area. Brown, 51, also is CU’s defensive passing game coordinator.
A native of Denver, Brown played football at Arvada High and Texas-El Paso. He was an assistant for 15 years in the NFL — including a stint with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the mid-1980s — prior to returning to CU in 2006 when Dan Hawkins became head coach. Brown is the son of Denver sports-talk personality Irv Brown.
CU has lost one assistant off Hawkins’ staff during this offseason. Offensive line coach Jeff Grimes took a similar position at Auburn in January. Hawkins replaced Grimes with former Illinois State head coach Denver Johnson last month.
