A fire at a south Denver apartment complex started outside a first-floor unit and burned into the building, according to the Denver Fire Department.

All 94 units of the Da Vinci building in the De Medici Apartments complex at 4295 E. Mexico Ave. were evacuated, but no one was injured, said Assistant Fire Chief Joe Hart.

The cause of the blaze is being investigated. The fire started on a first-floor patio just before noon, but Hart said he could not speculate on whether it was caused by a grill.

The family who lives there — a man, woman and daughter — were not home at the time. Crews quickly snuffed out the flames in apartment 107, Hart said.

Their apartment and the one above it were the only ones damaged, and the apartment complex has relocated those families to other units, Hart said. The American Red Cross helped evacuees, firefighters and investigators.
