WELD COUNTY — A Greeley man was killed Sunday afternoon when his sport utility vehicle went airborne and struck a utility pole near Prospect Valley, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

Ronald J. Turgeon Jr. was wearing a seat belt but was killed instantly, according to the Weld County coroner’s office.

Turgeon was driving a 2009 Ford Escape east on Colorado 52 about 12:30 p.m. when he ran off the right side of the road. He went down an embankment and hit a driveway culvert, troopers said in a statement.

The SUV went airborne, hit a utility pole and rolled on its top.

The cause is still under investigation, but troopers do not think alcohol, drugs or speed played a role.
