CARBONDALE — State health officials say a sewage spill in the Roaring Fork River last month is not a cause for alarm.
The Carbondale sewage treatment plant dumped partially treated sewage into the river Feb. 22, and it was reported to the state health department the next day, according to district engineer Mark Kadnuck.
Town utility director Mark O’Meara says his crew fixed a failed pump, which caused the spill, within about an hour of the accident.
O’Meara did not know how much sludge made it into the river. He says the town is working on plans to upgrade the plant so that when systems fail, there is a backup to prevent spills.
