A woman was sentenced to 12 years in prison in Denver District Court on Friday for misleading the court by falsely claiming she had cancer.

During a sentencing hearing last year for an identity-theft charge, Terrie Mauldin, 44, told the court she had ovarian cancer. Lynn Kimbrough, spokeswoman for the Denver district attorney’s office, said Mauldin was trying to delay or reduce the penalty — and successfully delayed the sentencing.

The DA’s office found Mauldin’s claim to be false. She was sentenced Friday to two concurrent 12-year terms: one for the original charge and another for falsely representing herself to the court.
