A day-long search ended this afternoon when a suspect in a sexual assault in Fremont County was shot and killed by Pueblo police officers.

David Wiggs, 54, was wanted on charges of sexual assault on a child in Florence.

Pueblo officers learned this morning that Wiggs was staying in a tent along Fountain Creek and had made threats to kill himself and others. His car was found this afternoon at an apartment complex on parking lot on Jerry Murphy Road near the creek.

He was also believed to have a pistol.

Wiggs was confronted and shot by two police officers on the East Fourth Street Bridge over Fountain Creek about 3:30 p.m.

The officers have been put on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation into the shooting, the Pueblo Police Department said in a statement tonight.

Pueblo police had issued a public statement earlier in the day warning that Wiggs should be considered armed and dangerous, and police put seven schools in Pueblo on lockdown.

Wiggs was arrested in 2000 on domestic violence and menacing charges in Loveland, according to a public records search.
