People outraged by the fatal shooting last week of a gentle mule that had the personality of a dog have contributed hundreds of dollars to a reward fund seeking the killer’s capture.
The reward, which started at $500, has now grown to about $2,500, said Jenn Jehly, the manager of Pikes Peak Resort, where Molly the mule lived.
Other people have offered to donate horses or mules to the resort.
“People are real eager to help,” Jehly said. “They want to see whoever did this caught.”
Thursday morning, someone shot Molly in the belly with a high-powered rifle and left her to bleed to death for hours in a fenced pasture 12 miles north of Woodland Park.
The mule later screamed in pain and collapsed next to Jehly. Molly then died in front of her.
Friends said children could ride Molly bareback and that she would curl up on the ground next to campfires or people.
People wishing to contribute to the fund can send money to the Molly the Mule Reward Fund, c/o Park State Bank, 710 West Hwy 24, Woodland Park, CO 80863.
If the shooter is not caught within a year, the money will be given to local animal-rescue shelters.
