Tom Braden, author of the book “Eight Is Enough,” which became a popular television sitcom, died in Denver early this morning. He was 92.

Braden had moved to northwest Denver six years ago because some of his children live here.

No local services are planned.

Braden had been a newspaper columnist and professor of English literature at Dartmouth College when he wrote the book in 1976.

The book initially didn’t sell well, but after it became a television hit, it was reissued in paperback and was a big seller, according to Rick Ridder, Braden’s son-in-law.

When the book came out, several of his children “were embarrassed” said Nancy Braden of Denver, one of his daughters, who was in college then.

“It was Dad’s perception of our family,” she said.

Nevertheless, she and her sister Joan Braden of Denver, praised their father as a good dad. “He wanted us all to feel loved and safe,” said Nancy Braden.

After the book, Braden was on the radio version and later the TV version of “Crossfire,” with Pat Buchanan.
