The Rockies are serious about resting first baseman Todd Helton. Despite going 5-for-9 against Arizona’s Doug Davis, Helton did not play Wednesday as a concession to his surgically repaired back. “I want to play, but I don’t make out the lineup,” Helton said. The idea is that Helton will be more productive and healthy by playing less, particularly on day games after night games. He will return for Friday’s home opener.

Garrett Atkins contributed a third-inning sacrifice fly. The Rockies didn’t post their first sacrifice fly last year until April 30, the 28th game of 2008.

Troy Tulowitzki walked three times. “If it’s not the first time in my life, it’s the second,” the shortstop said. Troy E. Renck, The Denver Post
