AURORA — The Aurora City Council has approved a 10-year lease of water rights to Nestle Waters North America.
The proposed water-harvesting plan calls for the world’s largest water-bottling company to use water Aurora owns in the Arkansas River Valley’s Twin Lakes reservoirs to replace water it removes from an aquifer near Nathrop. The council voted 7-4 in late March to allow Nestle to lease 200 acre-feet of water for $800 an acre-foot, with the cost increasing 5 percent every year.
Chaffee County commissioners must now decide wither to allow Nestle to draw 200 acre-feet of water from an aquifer near Nathrop each year and truck it to Denver to be bottled. The water would be sold under the Arrowhead brand.
