Colorado is keeping an eye on Texas, where officials announced Wednesday they have postponed all public high school athletic and academic competitions until May 11 because of the swine flu outbreak.

“We’re not sounding the alarm yet,” said Bill Reader, Colorado High School Activities Association commissioner.

The Texas move is considerable — it suspended the baseball and softball seasons and eliminated the regional track championships. Charles Breithaupt, executive director of the University Interscholastic League, said officials acted on the recommendation of public health officials.

“The health and safety of our student activity participants is of the utmost importance,” Breithaupt said in an Associated Press report. “Taking every possible precaution to prevent the further spreading of this disease is an important contribution to the welfare of our great state.”

Reader agreed: “You have to be safe. There’s nothing here yet, but it’s on our radar screen.”

The Texas state golf and tennis championships are scheduled to begin May 11. The state track meet has been extended from its normal two days to three and is set for May 12-14.

The Associated Press reported that all 176 professional soccer matches in Mexico this weekend will be played without fans; the Nationwide Tour postponed the Mexico Open golf tournament set for May 21-24 in Leon, and the Canadian Tour postponed the final two events of its golf swing in Mexico.
