BOULDER, Colo.—Erik Kiesau, the University of Colorado’s receivers coach and passing coordinator, is being promoted to offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach, replacing Mark Helfrich.

Helfrich, 35, is leaving the Buffaloes. Although no announcement has been made, he interviewed for a similar position at the University of Oregon last week.

Kiesau, 36, is the second-youngest offensive coordinator in Buffs history, replacing the man who was younger by 13 months.

Coach Dan Hawkins said he wants to name a new receivers coach as soon as possible.

Helfrich joined Hawkins’ staff from Arizona State three years ago but never had the same success he did with the Sun Devils. CU’s offense finished last in the Big 12 in scoring and total yards last season.

Helfrich was born in Medford, Ore., and played college football at Southern Oregon before working as an offensive graduate assistant for the Ducks in 1997.

Helfrich is the second assistant to leave the Buffs since the end of the season. Offensive line coach Jeff Grimes left for Auburn.
