For Pine Creek’s Ryann Warner, it’s all about confidence.
The Eagles No. 1 singles player found her rhythm Friday, defeating Rampart’s Erin Conley 6-2, 6-0 for the Class 5A Region 6 title at Memorial Park.
“I had some problems earlier this year with tendonitis in my biceps, and I missed some time on the court,” she said. “I was pretty nervous this morning when I woke up, but I think I’ve finally gotten back to myself and the way I play.”
Warner led the way as the Eagles earned a trip to state competition in all seven divisions. Pine Creek also won the regional title over Air Academy and Pine Creek by 30 and 32 points, respectively.
“It’s really important morale-wise for us to be sending all the girls,” Eagles coach Dave Lehman said. “But also, it’s essential that we have all seven up there if we’re going to compete with teams like Cherry Creek that always bring their entire team. It gives us a lot better shot.”
Rampart junior Nikki Amos defeated Pine Creek’s Julia Hubbard in the No. 2 singles title match, while Air Academy’s Claire Myers won in No. 3 singles. Pine Creek tandems won each of the doubles championships.
“We have been talking all season about communication and really working together in doubles, and I saw some of that really come together here,” Lehman said.
5A REGION 3
Host Palmer finished second to Arapahoe but will send all three singles players to state.
Sophomore Adriana Wojakowska, who won the state No. 2 singles title as a freshman, defeated Arapahoe’s Sarah Ray in No. 1 singles on Friday.
“Adriana has moments when she just wants to end a point maybe a little too soon,” Palmer coach Holly Strack said. “But when she finds her patience and gets into game mode, nothing can stop her.”
Doherty, only one point behind Palmer, sends all four doubles teams to state.
