DENVER—A labor bill giving firefighters the right to unionize without getting local approval is on its way to the governor but it’s not clear whether he’ll sign it.
The Senate backed the House’s version of the bill Friday, sending it on to Gov. Bill Ritter.
When asked earlier whether he would sign Senate Bill 180, Ritter said he told supporters they had to get the backing of local officials.
The group representing cities—the Colorado Municipal League—opposes it and lawmakers who used to serve on city councils voted against it.
Another key union bill is still pending. It would allow workers locked out of work during contract disputes to collect unemployment. That was the practice until the law was changed in 1999.
