Willie Shepherd says the separation between him and the law firm that includes his name is like a divorce.
Shepherd, 42, announced in a news release Tuesday that he will part company with Kamlet Shepherd & Reichert to take a partner position with Perkins Coie’s Denver office.
As of June 1, Kamlet Shepherd & Reichert will be known as Kamlet Reichert.
Shepherd said part of his impetus to leave the firm he helped form nine years ago with Jay Kam let was financial.
“The decision I made was good for me and to continue to develop my practice,” he said.
Former partner Kamlet could not be reached for comment Wednesday afternoon.
Shepherd, who was instrumental in landing the Democratic National Convention in Denver last year, said his partners will buy him out of the firm. He said he’s starting to move into the new firm’s office.
“With Jay, I think we’re OK,” Shepherd said. “It’s like a divorce.”
Kamlet and Shepherd formed their firm when Kamlet departed from Brownstein Hyatt & Farber and Shepherd left Patton Boggs. Shepherd and his wife, Sarah, are expecting their third child in July.

The Ritz-Carlton Denver has a new general manager starting Friday. Andrew Rogers will be moving with his family from the Ritz-Carlton in Kapalua, Hawaii. Former GM Michael King moved to Florida to pursue opening another hotel outside of the Ritz-Carlton brand.

Walt Stinson, co-founder and president of Denver-based ListenUp Audio/Video, has been voted into the Consumer Electronics Hall of Fame.
Inductees in previous years have included such luminaries as Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Edison, Guglielmo Marconiand Sony founder Akio Morita, and this year’s list includes Steve Jobsof Apple.
