BOULDER — Alexander Paul Pacheco, 18, of Broomfield, has not confessed to police that he had any involvement in 13-year-old Kelsey Shannon’s death, a defense attorney told a 17th Judicial District judge this morning.

“No cause of death has been determined and (Pacheco) has made no confession or acknowledgment that he had anything to do with Kelsey Shannon,” said defense attorney Megan Ring.

Evidence connecting Pacheco to Kelsey’s killing involves teenager reports that Pacheco told them he had “something to do with Kelsey Shannon’s death,” Ring said.

A Broomfield detective told the court that one of Pacheco’s friends told them after they found Kelsey’s body that Pacheco had admitted to killing her. In October, the friend said, Pacheco was at a party, acting upset and quiet, according to Broomfield detective Chris Kearns.

The friend told officers that Pacheco said he had a girlfriend who was 13 years old and that he believed she was cheating on him. Three days later, Pacheco told that friend, “I actually did it,” according to Kearns.

The friend asked, “Did what?” Pacheco responded, “I killed her,” Kearns said.

The friend asked, “Killed who?” and Pacheco responded, “Kelsey,” according to Kearns.

Police suspect Kelsey was killed between Oct. 14, when she disappeared, and Oct. 21.
