BOULDER, Colo.—Nearly 270 Boulder-area teachers have stayed home amid stalled pay negotiations.
The Boulder Valley School District says it had to find substitutes or make other provisions Tuesday after the teachers took personal days.
The district says 342 teachers were absent Monday.
The teachers union wants a permanent cost-of-living increase, but the district offered a 1-percent, one-year stipend, plus 1 percent additional pay for working two more professional-development days.
The district pays substitute teachers about $108 a day.
Teachers say they’re allotted 12 personal days a year and if they don’t take them, they can cash them out at the substitute rate. They say teachers who stay home are essentially paying for their own absences by giving up the money.
