LOWERCASEOAKLAND, Calif. — The prosecution is done presenting evidence in the case of a San Francisco Bay area transit officer charged with killing an unarmed man on a train station platform.

Prosecutors called witnesses over two days at a hearing to determine whether 27-year-old Johannes Mehserle (yoh-HAH’-nes MEZ’-ur-lee) will stand trial for murdering Oscar Grant. Mehserle has pleaded not guilty.

At least two witnesses testified that the officers at the station on New Year’s Day were overly aggressive, but they did not single out Mehserle. Some witnesses said the officer looked surprised after his pistol went off.

Mehserle’s lawyer says the officer accidentally grabbed his pistol instead of his Taser.

The defense will call its witnesses Wednesday.
