DENVER—A Colorado state senator has to memorize a new security passcode to the state Capitol because his old one was deactivated after he gave it to graduate students in a class he teaches.

Broomfield Republican Sen. Shawn Mitchell says he was recently told in an e-mail he would need to ask for a new code because of the unauthorized access to the building on May 6, the night after the lawmakers adjourned for the year.

Mitchell says that night he taught his Colorado government and politics class from the University of Colorado-Denver at the Capitol and gave his code to 11 students to get into the building.

State lawmakers are warned not to share their codes. Mitchell says he gave his to his students because he trusts them.
