The Federal Bureau of Investigation formally announced today it is determining whether 31-year-old Richard Glen Strandlof, a former mental patient who claimed to be a wounded Iraq war veteran and 9/11 survivor, used lies to solicit donations for veterans and the homeless.
Last week Board members of the Colorado Veterans Alliance uncovered numerous lies Strandlof, the founder of the organization, had told and asked the FBI to investigate his fund-raising activities.
Strandlof had called himself Rick Duncan and claimed to be a former Marine captain and U.S. Naval Academy graduate who was in the Pentagon during the Sept. 11 terrrorist attack in 2001.
Moreover, board members found that at a time he claimed to have been wounded in Iraq he was confined to a Reno, Nev., mental hospital.
