A new record-high temperature for May 19 was set in Denver today when 90 degrees was recorded at 1:24 p.m.

That temperature beat the previous record of 89 degrees set in 2006 and 1994, according to Frank Benton, meteorologist for the National Weather Service.

This also was the first 90-degree day of 2009, he said.

Benton said the temperature dropped quickly after the record was set as clouds and thunderstorms moved into the Denver area.

There is a slight chance of thunderstorms this afternoon and on Wednesday, when the predicted high is 86.

It will be dramatically cooler Thursday in Denver with a high of 58, said the National Weather Service.

“The passage of a strong cold front Wednesday night will bring an abrupt end to the summerlike weather on Thursday,” said forecasters. “Cool and moist upslope conditions will be accompanied by scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms on the plains.”

However, temperatures will then rebound.

Highs on Friday through Memorial Day in Denver are predicted to be in the low to mid-70s, with a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms throughout the period.
