Two men were hospitalized this morning with serious injuries after the Ford Expedition they were in sideswiped another vehicle and crashed while fleeing a State Patrol trooper north of Colorado Springs.
The accident happened at about 7:40 a.m. after the 1998 sport utility vehicle sped away from a traffic stop on southbound Interstate 25 about 6 miles south of Monument Hill, said Colorado State Patrol Sgt. John Hahn. The trooper had stopped the SUV for allegedly speeding through a construction zone, according to a CSP news release.
The suspect drove off, and the trooper followed the vehicle for about 6 miles before the Expedition hit a Volvo near the North Academy Boulevard exit.
“The suspect sideswiped another car and rolled. The passenger was ejected, the driver wasn’t,” Hahn said.
The driver was identified as Adrian Garcia, 18, of Pueblo.
The CSP said he was taken to a hospital with “serious injuries that do not appear to be life-threatening.”
His passenger, an 19-year-old man from Pueblo, also had serious injuries that were not life-threatening.
The driver of the Volvo, a 37-year-old woman from Colorado Springs, sustained minor injuries.
Officers discovered there was a felony warrant for Garcia’s arrest out of Pueblo County. They said a 9mm handgun was found in the SUV.
Charges against Garcia are pending.
