Broomfield police shot and killed a 58-year-old man inside his home late Sunday night after he fatally shot his 50-year-old wife.

The man was pronounced dead at the home at 13005 Lowell Blvd. shortly after he was shot to death by officers at 10:45 p.m. His wife was taken to a hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

The names of the couple have not been released pending notification of family members, said Sgt. Mark Goodell, spokesman for the Broomfield Police Department.

One of three of the couple’s relatives, who were inside the home at the time, called police at 10:34 p.m. and said the couple was arguing.

Seven patrol officers and a supervisor responded to the call, Goodell said.

It is not yet clear when the man shot his wife — whether he killed her before officers arrived.

When police arrived they tried to get the man to surrender his weapon, Goodell said.

“They were trying to de-escalate the situation,” he said.

Goodell said the circumstances leading to an officer firing his gun at the husband are under investigation and he cannot comment about what prompted him to shoot.

No officers were shot and none of the three other family members in the home was harmed, Goodell said.

A police psychologist will interview the officers who were involved before the department decides what measures to take, he said.

It is customary, however, that the department places an officer who shoots someone on paid administrative leave while an investigation is ongoing, Goodell said.

The Adams/Broomfield County Critical Incident Team is investigating the shooting. The team is compiled from various agencies in the 17th Judicial District, Goodell said.
