EAGLE, Colo.—Eagle County Airport officials are hoping to attract more visitors to ski resorts by expanding the runway by 1,000 feet to accommodate bigger commercial flights.

The airport will be closed until Sept. 1 while the $22 million project is completed. Eagle County Manager Keith Montag says the airport hopes it will get more visitors from as far as New York City in the summer.

Terminal Manager Chris Anderson says high temperatures and the altitude restricts the amount of fuel and passengers planes can have to successfully take off from the existing runway. The runway will be 9,000 feet long when it’s completed.

Montag says the Federal Aviation Administration is paying for 95 percent of project.
