BOULDER, Colo.—The University of Colorado has offered to shorten its planned Institute of Behavioral Science building to reduce its impact on Boulder’s skyline, but school officials want the city to help cover the cost.

The four-story building, as designed, would stand about 77 feet tall—22 feet above Boulder’s height limit of 55 feet.

CU Chancellor Phil DiStefano says the university can alter the slope of the roof by a few degrees and reduce the ceiling height a few inches on the first three floors to shave about 5 feet off the building. But officials say the redesign fees will cost CU $120,000, plus $500,000 more for a previous deal to eliminate a rooftop penthouse.

As a state entity, CU is not bound by Boulder’s building regulations.
