COLORADO SPRINGS — A 64-year-old woman convicted of killing two bicyclists after she crashed into them with her truck last year was sentenced to three years in prison.

Police say Barbara Thomas was under the influence of morphine and barbiturates and was not wearing her required glasses when the accident happened. Killed in the accident were Edgar “E.J.” Juarez, 30, and Jayson Kilroy, 28.

Thomas was ordered to begin her sentence immediately despite her pleas to be allowed to spend time with her family before she was taken to prison. Thomas uses a wheelchair and an oxygen tank, but she tried to stand up and pleaded with the judge, saying, “Don’t take me.”
