Even bad guys seem worried about the high price of gasoline.

Instead of the highly prized Cadillac and Lincoln SUVs normally sought by rip-off artists, thieves made off with 13 scooters from Sportique Scooters at West 32nd Avenue and Pecos Street sometime Sunday.

The store, which keeps an inventory of as many as 60 scooters in a small yard enclosed by a 6-foot-high chain-link fence, reported the theft Sunday evening.

Police called it a “forced entry”but didn’t say whether the fence was cut or a door to the building was pushed in.

The thieves were able to roll the scooters away. Police said they found two scooters in a nearby alley.

One of Sportique’s owners, Adam Baker, said his staff found three others nearby.

The store sells various makes and models of scooters, which can be more than $6,000 each. Police said six of the stolen scooters were 2009 models.

Baker said the company, which has four locations, is covered by insurance.

Denver police spokesman Sonny Jackson warned scooter owners not to rely on the manufacturers’ locks but to buy substantial cables or chains along with padlocks to secure them.
