LINCOLN, Neb.—One of Francis Allen’s longtime assistants will replace him as head coach of the Nebraska men’s gymnastics program.

Chuck Chmelka (sha-MILK-uh) was named to the post Wednesday by Nebraska Athletic Director Tom Osborne.

Chmelka has been a Nebraska assistant since 1986, and he competed under Allen’s direction from 1978 to 1981.

Allen retired last week at age 66. His eight national championships in his 40 years at Nebraska rank second in NCAA men’s gymnastics history behind the nine won by Penn State’s Gene Wettstone.

Osborne said another assistant coach, former Olympian Jim Hartung, will stay on to help Chmelka.
