CHICAGO — Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose says he used “extremely poor judgment” in posing for a photo flashing a gang sign.
The NBA’s rookie of the year said in a statement issued through the Bulls that the photo circulating on the Internet was taken at a party he went to while at the University of Memphis.
Rose says he’s “guilty of being young, naive and of using extremely poor judgment,” but he has never been affiliated with a gang.
The NCAA has said an unnamed Memphis player had a person take the SAT for him and used the score to get admitted.
It said the athlete played for the Tigers only in the 2007-08 season and the 2008 NCAA Tournament. Only Rose fits that description.
Memphis lost to Kansas in the 2008 national title game, blowing a nine-point lead late in the contest.
Former NBA referee Donaghy is attacked in prison
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — A spokesman for former NBA referee Tim Donaghy says Donaghy was attacked in prison by a fellow inmate who claimed he had ties to the New York mob.
Pat Zaranek, a spokesman for Donaghy, said that the former referee, serving a 15-month sentence in a gambling scandal, was struck in the right knee with a stick or other hard object in November.
Zaranek, of Executive Prison Consultants, says Donaghy expects to be transferred from the camp in Pensacola, Fla., to a halfway house in Tampa next week.
Zaranek says Donaghy’s knee still gives him trouble and that he will need surgery. A Federal Bureau of Prisons spokeswoman declined comment.
Jordan jersey stolen from Parker’s home
SAN ANTONIO — A man has been arrested for allegedly stealing an autographed Michael Jordan jersey from the home of San Antonio Spurs guard Tony Parker.
The Bexar County sheriff’s office says Parker’s manager reported the jersey missing last month. It had been taken from a gym under construction at Parker’s home.
Detectives found a listing for the jersey on Craigslist that was posted by Christopher James Carolan. The 22-year-old San Antonio man worked for the security company hired to protect the home. He was charged with burglary. The Associated Press
