SEATTLE — The United States men’s soccer team returned home from the FIFA Confederations Cup and used one of its youngest lineups in recent memory Saturday night to rout Grenada 4-0 as it opened its title defense in the regional championship of North and Central America and the Caribbean, the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Freddy Adu scored the opening goal in the seventh minute and Stuart Holden doubled the lead in the 31st, both fed by Robbie Rogers.
Rogers scored in the 60th minute and Charlie Davies, one of the few players kept on from the Confederations Cup, got the final goal in the 68th.
• Jeff Cunningham scored twice in a two-minute span of the first half to lead host FC Dallas to a 2-1 victory that extended the New York Red Bulls’ road winless skid to 23 games.
• Kei Kamara scored and Pat Onstad made three saves for his eighth shutout of the year in the visiting Houston Dynamo’s 1-0 victory over the Kansas City Wizards.
• Alejandro Moreno scored the tying goal in the 59th minute as the Columbus Crew pushed its home unbeaten streak to 17 games with a 1-1 draw with D.C. United.
• Alecko Eskandarian‘s goal in the eighth minute gave the Los Angeles Galaxy a 1-0 win over the visiting New England Revolution.
Smith is back on board Bird
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith will pilot the Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird in the $750,000 West Virginia Derby and the $1 million Travers Stakes next month.
Smith guided Mine That Bird to second place in the Preakness after Calvin Borel opted to ride filly Rachel Alexandra. Trainer Bennie Woolley Jr. decided to dump Borel after Borel said he couldn’t make a firm commitment to ride Mine That Bird the rest of the year.
• Dry Martini rallied from last place, beating Asiatic Boy by two lengths in the $400,000 Suburban Handicap at Belmont Park in New York.
• Presious Passion scored a repeat victory in the $750,000 United Nations Stakes at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J.
Turkoglu headed to Raptors?
TORONTO — Free agent Hedo Turkoglu will join the Toronto Raptors after spurning the Portland Trail Blazers, according to multiple reports.
The 6-foot-10 forward helped the Orlando Magic to the NBA Finals, but opted out of his Orlando contract when the team acquired Vince Carter from New Jersey.
