GREELEY, Colo.—A 16-year-old girl from Greeley is recovering from West Nile virus, Weld County’s first human case this year.
The county health department said Wednesday the girl was hospitalized but is now home.
The state health department says it’s the second confirmed human case of West Nile in Colorado this year. Jefferson County reported the first one last week. That person was also recovering at home.
West Nile is usually harmless to humans, although it can cause flu-like symptoms or even death in rare cases. It is carried by mosquitoes.
Weld County officials say their mosquito traps have caught an increasing number of the insects over the past two weeks, including the type that carries West Nile.
