ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK, Colo.—A kayaker in the Poudre River has drowned after flipping and hitting his head.
The accident happened at about noon Saturday near the Long Draw Reservoir. Authorities say 21-year-old Derk Slottow flipped at the Big South Fork near Fort Collins.
An acquaintance of Slottow pulled him from the river and attempted CPR, but then left to get help. The acquaintance hiked 2 miles before finding a Rocky Mountain National Park Ranger. Slottow could not be revived.
Slottow was a student at the Colorado School of Mines, where he was president of the kayaking club.
