The winner: Nancy and Bill Hurd, Paia, Hawaii: Although the actual statue has only been on the lawn for a year or so, the spirit of the Buddha and the art of Happiness have lived for decades on this property, known as Berrys Garage during the ’70s and ’80s. My husband and I met there at the KDNK talent show, a fundraiser for the local public radio station. We ended up buying the property and running a newspaper (The Carbondale Union) out of the garage. Later, we remodeled the building into four commercial spaces. One of our best tenants was a Sherpa woman from Nepal who ran an import store for many years.
