PUEBLO, Colo.—Audiotape of a secret meeting held by the Colorado State University board of governors captures the board’s chairman saying efforts to open up its selection of a system chancellor struck him as “un-Christian.”

Chairman Doug Jones can be heard on the tape of a May 5 closed-door meeting released after a state district judge ruled in June that the CSU board violated the state’s open meeting laws.

According to a story in The Chieftain Saturday, Jones also urges the board to act quickly before lawmakers change the law to force the appointment process to be more transparent.

There was no home listing for Jones and a message left Saturday at his business, Jones Realty Group, was not immediately returned.

Fellow board member Joe Blake, who was named the solo finalist during the close meetings, was named chancellor in June.

On Wednesday, the board of governors agreed to pay $19,000 in legal fees incurred by three media organizations that filed a lawsuit alleging the board violated Colorado’s open-meetings law during its selection process.

The Chieftain, Coloradoan, and Colorado Independent challenged the closed door meetings held April 28, April 29, and May 5. A state judge later ordered the release of 1 1/2 hours of audiotape of a four-hour closed door meeting during which Blake was interviewed and named the sole finalist.
