An abused horse that was recently rescued and quickly grew to become a rescue farm’s most popular horse was struck and killed by lightning Thursday afternoon.
Ledger, named after the late actor and equestrian Heath Ledger, was recently rescued by the Aurora animal control division, then taken to the Colorado Horse Rescue’s Longmont farm for rehabilitation.
Ledger regained his strength and became very popular among visitors and guest riders. He was scheduled to be adopted next week.
Several students attending a class on horsemanship Thursday saw the lightning bolt hit Ledger. They and guest instructor Anna Twinney ran to the scene but said Ledger had already died.
