The body of a 19-year-old man was pulled from St. Mary’s Lake near Idaho Springs on Sunday afternoon after he went under the water the previous evening, the Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office said.

The body of Sean Anderson, whose hometown was not available, was pulled from the lake about 1 p.m. He and three friends had tried to swim across the body of water below St. Mary’s Glacier.

Another 19-year-old nearly drowned as he tried to rescue Anderson, authorities said. He was airlifted to St. Anthony Central Hospital about 7:30 p.m. Saturday. His condition was not released, nor were the names of Anderson’s companions.

Authorities said the water was below 40 degrees at the time of Anderson’s drowning.

“That water temp is about 34 degrees, and survival in it, if you aren’t a good swimmer or if something happens, your survival chances are just about nonexistent,” said Sheriff Don Krueger. The Denver Post, 9News
