A southwest Colorado wildfire grew from 286 acres Saturday to about 5,000 acres today, blanketing the region around Narraguinnep Canyon with heavy smoke, fire officials said.
The fire began Friday afternoon and is burning near the Dolores River, 12 miles southeast of Dove Creek.
The fire was allowed to burn in remote areas for ecological benefits, and crews suppressed the fire in drainage areas that lead directly to the Dolores River, officials said.
