COLORADO SPRINGS — A fire gutted several condominiums on Colorado Springs’ west side Sunday afternoon and left several people without homes.
The fire started about 3:45 p.m. when neighbors said that they heard explosions at 2268 Stepping Stones Way, a condominium complex. By the time firefighters arrived five minutes later, the building was engulfed in flames.
Six units were damaged, and 12 were evacuated as a precaution, said Lt. Julie Stone, a Fire Department spokeswoman. She said a 63-year-old woman was treated at a hospital for smoke inhalation and was in stable condition.
No other people were hurt, but numerous pets were reported missing.
Red Cross officials said they were helping nine families find temporary lodging and giving them money for clothing and food.
Firefighters were still investigating the cause of the fire Sunday night.
