A metro area man with a history of mental illness leapt from the back of an ambulance stopped on the East Hampden Avenue bridge and jumped over the railing to Interstate 25 tonight.
The man, who has not been named by authorities, sustained only broken bones and was in stable condition after the 50-foot drop to the freeway.
“Fortunately there was no traffic coming at that moment, and the first car to approach him stopped and they blocked him off from traffic,” said Denver police spokeswoman Vicki Ferrari.
Ferrari did not know what led to the man being in the ambulance before he ran. The man won’t face charges, she said.
