President Barack Obama told religious groups that the debate over health insurance legislation “goes to the heart of who we are as a people.”
“I believe that nobody in America should be denied basic health care because they lack health insurance,” Obama said during a conference call Wednesday sponsored by a group of religious organizations promoting health insurance coverage for all Americans.
The effort to overhaul the health care system raises “a core moral and ethical obligation” to care for the less-fortunate, Obama said.The conference call was sponsored by the group 40 Days for Health Reform, organized by more than 30 religious denominations and organizations to press Congress to enact health care legislation.
