A woman who died of injuries Tuesday after being hit by a train in Weld County has been identified as 36-year-old Pamela Mitchell of Englewood.
Chris Robillard, an investigator for the Weld County Coroner’s Office, said that an autopsy will be conducted on Mitchell this afternoon.
He said the Weld County Sheriff’s Office is saying that Mitchell’s death was a “probable suicide” although an official determination will be made after the autopsy is completed.
Witnesses saw Mitchell walking northbound along the railroad tracks about 11:48 a.m. Tuesday a quarter-mile north of the intersection of Weld County Road 44 and U.S. 85 near Gilcrest.
As the train approached, Mitchell either stumbled or squatted down in front of the northbound train, the witnesses said.
The engineer blew the whistle and applied the emergency brakes but Mitchell didn’t respond and was hit by the train, according to Weld County Undersheriff Margie Martinez.
She was flown by helicopter to the North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley where she died about 2 p.m. Tuesday.
Martinez said a vehicle belonging to Mitchell was located in Gilcrest.
