BEIJING — Chinese authorities, facing criticism at home and abroad, released three activists from prison Sunday.
Xu Zhiyong, founder of the Open Constitution Initiative, was unexpectedly freed on bail after more than three weeks in prison on charges of tax evasion. A co-worker, Zhuang Lu, also was released.
Ilham Tohti, an economics professor who had written about economic discrimination against the Uighur minority, was released after about six weeks in custody, according to a Uighur website.
Meanwhile, the state-run China Daily said 200 people will be tried for involvement in last month’s Xinjiang riots that killed nearly 200 people.
