The lights in City Park’s Ferril Lake will twinkle again after nearly two months of repairs caused by a lightning strike.
The center nozzle that fires a 90-foot geyser was struck on June 26, damaging the LED lights and equipment inside the vault, according to the Friends of the Electric Fountain, a citizens group that pushed for the 101-year-old light’s repair.
The fountain puts on lighted, choreographed water shows about every half-hour after dark from spring to fall.
After decades in disrepair, the fountain was rededicated in August of last year, just before the Democratic National Convention, after a $3.2 million overhaul. The light shows returned a century after the original fountain was completed before the Democrats’ 1908 convention in Denver.
The new fountain is operated by computer software, uses energy-efficient LED lights and recycles water, while also aerating the lake to reduce algae and improve the habitat for fish. The Denver Post
