DENVER—Colorado abortion foes have launched another campaign to amend the state constitution to give legal protections to human embryos.

Organizers began collecting signatures Tuesday to get the measure on next year’s ballot.

The measure is often called a “personhood amendment” because it grants embryos the legal status of a person.

Last year, voters decided 3-to-1 against a similar measure that defined fertilized human embryos as people.

Backers say the wording may have confused voters and led them to visualize chicken eggs.

They say the new version will use the term “the beginning of the biological development” instead of “fertilized.”

The state Title Board has approved the wording of the proposal, a required step before signature-gathering starts.
