DENVER—Joe Corbett, a man convicted in the 1960 slaying of the grandson of the founder of the Coors brewery, had died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot.
Chief Denver deputy coroner Michelle Weiss-Samaras said Corbett died from a single gunshot wound to the head Monday morning. He was 80 years old and had been diagnosed with cancer, Weiss- Samaras said Tuesday.
Corbett was convicted of killing Adolph Coors III during a botched kidnapping attempt. He served 19 years in prison before being released in December 1980, according to Colorado Department of Correction records.
Before the slaying, Corbett was a Fulbright scholar at the University of Oregon and had entertained dreams of going to medical school. He had an IQ of 148. A message left for a Molson Coors spokeswoman was not immediately returned.
