WILMINGTON, N.C.—Officials with the U.S. Coast Guard say two women parasailing on the southeastern North Carolina coast were killed when a rope connecting the parasail to the boat disconnected.

Multiple media outlets reported that 56-year-old Lorrie Shoup of Granby, Colo., and 60-year-old Cynthia Woodcock of Kernersville were killed in Friday’s accident at Ocean Isle Beach.

Tyisha Woodcock, who was Cynthia Woodcock’s daughter-in-law, said the two women were on a trip with Woodcock’s aunt, Sybil Carpenter of Cary, and another friend.

Commander John Nadeau of the Coast Guard’s Marine Safety Unit in Wilmington had no additional details on the accident.

An outgoing message left on the phone at N.C. Watersports, which operated the boat and parasail, said it was closed for the summer.
